In 1943, the Nazis ordered me and many others in Holland to go to a labor camp at the Daimler-Benz factory in Germany. You couldn't say no. My mother was worried, but I told her Christian Science would help me in Germany the same way it had helped me in Holland. I was 22 years old at the time.
She learned of Christian Science when I was 14 years old, and that's when I started going to Sunday School and later to church. The things I learned there gave me enough strength to face the labor camp in Germany.
Those first four weeks at the factory were very difficult for me. We worked more than 12 hours each day, 7 days a week. We were not allowed to take a break or sit during that time. After that, we spent 2-3 hours each night building shelters and housing for workers.
