Spiritual healing education—a Baptist's view

From the September 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From my earliest years, curiosity about the origin and nature of life has catalyzed ceaseless questions for me, as well as a great deal of study and work in the biological and physical sciences. I've observed, queried, and studied even the minutest details of the environment and organisms.

One experience in particular during those years made an indelible impression on me—the healing of my older sister. According to the doctor, she was dying of advanced rheumatic fever and had no more than six weeks to live. She was 16 at the time. The visible symptoms of her illness, the doctor's diagnosis and prognosis, and our family's devastating hurt and fear were all met as "nothing" by a Christian Science practitioner, who spoke with some members of the family on the bus one day as my sister was returning from the doctor's office. The practitioner introduced us to spiritual healing in Christian Science and began praying for my sister. She was completely healed, and today, at 71, has no signs of damage whatsoever from that illness. Our mother, at 94, still joyfully reflects on this healing. She and my sister read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and are active in the Baptist church.

Not surprisingly, my sister's healing profoundly affected my study of the Scriptures and my conviction that they have a very practical application to life. I've always believed that the solutions to problems of every sort are within us and that those solutions are carefully laid out in the Scriptures. I've never been disappointed when I've earnestly sought the fulfillment of the promise "The kingdom of God is within you," Luke 17:21. stated in the Bible and elucidated by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health. Numerous physical healings and solutions to many personal challenges have come to me through the study of these two books. I feel awe and appreciation as my understanding and experience of God's power and presence keep expanding. I'm growing to know God better as a loving, triune God who is "All-in-all" See, for example, Science and Health, p. 103. and entirely good—who is Life itself—according to the Scriptures and Mrs. Eddy.
