CONFERENCE REPORT

Engaging with deep things of the universe

From the September 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Among the venues for "lifelong learning" these days are conferences. We thought our readers would be interested in highlights of a conference last spring, exploring the relationship between religion and science: the Omega Institute's "The Spiritual Adventure: Using Wisdom Traditions for a Spiritual Life." Frequent contributor Jeffrey Hildner reports.

Over 1500 people from far and wide have swept into a Manhattan hotel in the thick of the theater district for a weekend conference. But they're not here for the bright lights of Broadway. They're here for a different kind of light, an inner light. The kind that lights up what one conference speaker describes as "the big picture."

Conference organizer Elizabeth Lesser introduced a keynote speaker, Columbia University professor of physics and mathematics Brian Greene, by reminding everyone of George Carlin's quip "Just when I found out the meaning of life, they changed it." It was a humorous lens for viewing the challenge that faces not only religion but also science in the search for truth.
