Gifts from the wise men

From the December 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Jesus was born, his parents didn't sent out announcements. They didn't have to. Angels announced his birth to shepherds working in their fields.

The Bible also says that wise men far to the east had been watching for signs that the Messiah was born. They had studied prophecies predicting the arrival of this Saviour. So when they saw a special star, they knew those prophecies were fulfilled. Travel wasn't easy in those days, but the wise men left their homes, and together they followed the star to Bethlehem. There they found Jesus and rejoiced. They brought Jesus presents of gold and special spices to honor him as the newborn king.

The wise men showed that we, too, can watch for good. And in this way, we can also be "wise men." God gives everyone gifts, such as love and courage. And when we find these gifts and use them in our own lives, we can honor the Messiah and rejoice.
