CHURCH ALIVE

...and from Florence to Athens

From the July 2009 issue of The Christian Science Journal

managing editor of The Herald of Christian Science, along with John Sparkman, business development director of The Christian Science Publishing Society, and Kari Mashos, a Christian Science practitioner and teacher, traveled recently to Italy and Greece to meet with Christian Scientists. Leide gives highlights of their travels and the insights she gained from meeting fellow church members from these two cradles of civilization.

"Capisco l'italiano ma non lo parlo ancora" (I understand, but I don't speak Italian yet), I explained to my new friends in three beautiful cities of Italy. The vibrant countries of Italy and Greece welcomed my friends and me, and I was thrilled to find myself in cultures so filled with history—countries that helped shape the Western world in so many aspects, including art, law, and democracy.

In February, representing The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society, John, Kari, and I met with churches to explain the thinking behind the changes underway in the Church's publishing plans for the 21st century, including that the Italian and Greek Heralds, from July on, will be available only online. John explained that the Publishing Society has been redoubling efforts to be faithful to practices based on the Deed of Trust, which Mary Baker Eddy wrote in 1898. The Board of Trustees explained their strategy extensively in a July 2008 Journal article, "A Publishing Business Poised for Change" (p. 50).
