I cannot recall a time in my life when society has been so bombarded with messages about the effects of aging. Recently, I had a healing of a physical ailment that alerted me to the importance of mentally challenging the assertions, particularly in the media, that we are vulnerable to certain diseases as we age and that modern medicine is the only solution.
The symptoms developed early this year when I found that I was urinating with greater frequency, and with some pain and difficulty, only three weeks prior to my firm's annual meeting at which I was to give an hour-long presentation. Earlier, I had seen a segment on the evening news that described all the possible diagnoses for these symptoms, along with a host of drugs and aids available to treat them. That only caused me to become afraid and to speculate about what the problem might be, and how it might be medically treated.
As the difficulty became more acute, I wondered if an internal blockage might be the cause. I expressed concern to my wife that I might not be able to deliver the presentation at our firm's meeting, now just a week away. Always supportive, she helped awaken my thought with this statement from Science and Health, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (p. 494). Furthermore, my wife assured me that I could expect to be supported by this divine Love while giving my presentation, since it was certainly a right human activity. No evil suggestion claiming otherwise could prevent me from being at this important event. "You have a right to human normalcy," she said.
