What a feast!

A new view of a Bible story reveals a clearer understanding of God’s mothering love for His creation.

I know I’m not the only one who loves the story of Jesus turning water into wine. Its multilayered implications that the Christ is present in every moment resonates sweet promise.

Yet the other day, the Gospel’s straightforward telling of this story moved me in a way it hadn’t before—as if another layer had peeled itself off, to teach me deeper lessons of love.

According to John’s Gospel, Jesus and his mother, Mary, attend a wedding feast—and almost as an aside, John adds that Jesus’ disciples come, too. Sparse though the telling is, it’s easy to feel that everyone, even friends of friends, would have been warmly welcomed.
