Glittering rocks

From the June 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The four young swimmers were excitedly diving into the water at the local gravel pit and coming up with a variety of colorful, beautiful rocks they had found at the bottom. One young boy swam over to me and asked breathlessly, “Do you want me to find you some diamonds?”

To see the enthusiasm of these innocent amateur geologists made my heart sing. Their expectancy of good and their joy in finding each new rock reminded me of the Bible verse, “Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:24). Each time the boys unclenched their fists to reveal their newly discovered treasures, eyes blinking and hair dripping, they would give joyfully imaginative descriptions of the rocks: “It’s an arrowhead!” “It’s a fossil!” “It’s from a caveman, and it’s a drawing of an elephant!”

When thinking prayerfully about ourselves and others, we can know that each spiritual discovery God leads us to can glitter with inspiration, just like finding a “new rock.” When we cherish God as infinite Soul, we can have fullness of joy each moment and with each thought. Each new opportunity God directs us to is a chance to unveil new possibilities for spiritual joy. Like beautiful, colorful rocks found in nature, the harmony of God, good, is all around and is always here for us to accept and love.
