After my older brother, who was a great support to me, passed away in 1977, I faced lots of challenges. Most of all, I was very worried about my daughter’s health. She was two years old at the time and suffered from chronic diarrhea. According to the doctors, this was the reason why our daughter had never been able to walk. At first, my wife and I had our daughter follow a treatment in modern medicine, then a treatment in traditional African medicine—but all to no avail. Our daughter’s condition seemed incurable.
Upon learning of my situation, a friend felt compassion for me. He gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and told me that the message of the book would bring me the solutions I was looking for. At first, I refused to take the book because I did not trust the word Science in the title, also because I was completely unaware of the existence and teachings of Christian Science.
However, my friend strongly insisted that I take and read that book, convinced that it would help me. Because of his insistence, I felt obligated to accept it. I then started reading it. I had become an atheist a few years before, having lost all faith in God. But the content of Science and Health immediately caught my attention.
