Despondency healed, legal case resolved

From the May 2017 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I grew up attending the Christian Science Sunday School and generally listened to my parents and tried my best to follow the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ Jesus. Challenges that arose were met through prayer and spiritual study. After college, I began an exciting career abroad. And I fell in love. We married and decided to start a family.

Within a few months, though, my dream life collapsed. The marriage turned into a contentious divorce proceeding. I felt that I was losing everything and was so distressed I found myself wishing I had never been born. It seemed so unfair. Why me?

I thought of Job from the Old Testament. Job was blessed with a large family and material wealth. He had it all. But he lost everything, including his health. Despondent, he felt that God was punishing him unjustly. Clearly, he had little understanding of God’s power and parental love.
