Testimonies of Healing

Prayer clears throat obstruction

From the May 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On two occasions I have been healed of a blocked throat. The first was during supper one Wednesday evening just before I was to read for the testimony meeting at our branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Food became lodged in my throat, making it impossible for me to swallow. After trying unsuccessfully to drink water, I phoned a Christian Science practitioner, then drove to church. Feeling sure that reading the truth would clear my throat, I began the service, but while reading from the Bible, I realized I could not continue. By that time a previous Reader, seeing my need, had come up to the desk, and she took over.

I went home, phoned the practitioner again, and spent several hours in study and prayer. I could not lie down and spent a sleepless night sitting up in bed. As dawn was breaking, I suddenly remembered Mary Baker Eddy’s account of an instantaneous healing of a throat cancer. This is how she describes it on page 7 of Unity of Good: “When I have most clearly seen and most sensibly felt that the infinite recognizes no disease, this has not separated me from God, but has so bound me to Him as to enable me instantaneously to heal a cancer which had eaten its way to the jugular vein.” Further down the page she adds that “an acknowledgment of the perfection of the infinite Unseen confers a power nothing else can.”

Although my fear was great and the physical discomfort acute, I clung to this statement, insisting that I was then and there in the presence of God, the “infinite Unseen” that had healed that cancer many decades before. This mental struggle must have gone on for nearly an hour when suddenly the blockage cleared and I was able to swallow again. I gratefully phoned the practitioner, then slept for a couple of hours before making my way to work. My employers, who had been in church the night before, were very surprised to see me.
