Righteous rebellion

From the May 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I have found that in Christian Science there is a way to see rebellion in a spiritual light. Christian Science teaches that through following Christ Jesus’ example, we can rebel against any evil that we see or come across.

Christ Jesus was the perfect model of rebelling spiritually through the authority given of God. He overcame every phase of evil, disease, sin, and lack. He rebelled against religious hypocrisy; he overcame sickness, physical limitation, and even death through divine authority; and he resisted the claim that material wealth is more powerful than Spirit by providing food in the wilderness and lifting up the poor.

Mary Baker Eddy uses words such as God-given authority, resist, and rebellion to illustrate the spiritual power we each have to overcome limitation, hatred, sickness, or any other form of evil. She writes, “Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 391). Statements such as this one show us that we have the right to stand up to error—beliefs misrepresenting the true nature of God and man.
