“Will you teach the youngest Sunday School class of three-year-olds?” asked the Sunday School superintendent over the phone. I’d had minimal contact with children and no idea how to teach that age group. But desiring to support my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I accepted.
As soon as I hung up the phone, I was bombarded with uneasy thoughts like, “They are so young; maybe they won’t sit still and listen.” And, “What if they want to go back to the nursery?” A wry comment I’d once heard from a preschool teacher reverberated in my thinking: “At that age, if they can’t color it, or can’t eat it, they don’t want it.”
Fortunately, I recognized that doubtful, negative thinking was no way to approach this opportunity. To change mental direction, I began by gratefully acknowledging what an immeasurable blessing my Sunday School experience had been and continues to be in my life. The spiritual lessons imparted by the many dedicated and inspired teachers helped establish a strong spiritual foundation that has stayed with me. Out of deep gratitude, I wanted to share some of what I learned in Sunday School and to support the students.
