Purifying our motives and thoughts propels healing

From the November 2020 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We often read today about spiritual healing, but there are so many different approaches to it, and even those that appear to work at first sometimes prove to be inconsistent or unreliable in their results. On the other hand, those who have studied the four Gospels in the Bible containing the teachings and healing works of Christ Jesus undoubtedly have discovered that Jesus consistently healed the types of ailments people face today—including those that are acute and chronic, congenital, hereditary, and contagious—and he healed them on the spot, instantaneously, and without medicine.

And Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also” (John 14:12). It is natural for some to reason, “OK, I believe in Christ Jesus, so I should be able to heal effectively, too!” But for many, it becomes undeniably clear that a deeper understanding of his healing work and other biblical healing work is also needed in order to consistently bring about effective healing.

Jesus relied on God as the source of all healing power; he showed that healing flowed from thought and character reflecting God’s purifying, healing, and transforming love. Studying Jesus’ healing works, we see examples of him sometimes specifically tying physical healing to being freed from sin (e.g., Matthew 9:2–7, John 5:1–15). He also mentioned that healing takes place so “that the works of God should be made manifest” (John 9:3). And other accounts of his healing work elucidate points such as having faith in God’s power rather than human ability.
