I would like to testify to God’s loving protection. Some time ago my husband and I had a dispute with our city council over how much money was owed to the city. The property we live on was originally two lots, or a double “erf,” as we call it in South Africa. When we bought the estate, it was made into one property. Years later, the council started charging us double rates for trash removal and water supply. We disputed this, and the matter was under arbitration.
One morning, two young men arrived at our property after my husband had left with the children. I was at home with my assistant, Cecilia. When these young men arrived, I asked them how I could help them, and they claimed to be from the city council. They informed me that I had not paid what we ostensibly owed the city, and that they were therefore going to disconnect our electricity and water. I was very concerned, as it is difficult to be reconnected again once there is a disconnection. Having two young children, this would not have been a viable proposition.
I asked them for proof of identity, and they showed me their badges, as well as a disconnection notice. When I asked if they could wait until I called my husband to come home and speak to them, they became very aggressive and threatening towards me, unwilling to compromise. I thought their behavior was inappropriate but didn’t consider it suspicious.
