Years before the founder of this magazine was the internationally known author Mary Baker Eddy, she was known to her friends and acquaintances as Mary Glover. One day, she received the following telegram: “Mrs. Gale is very sick, please come Monday morning if possible. Answer yes or no.”
Mrs. Glover immediately left to see her, and when she arrived, the doctors in attendance told her that Mrs. Gale was suffering from pneumonia and had no chance of recovery. Mrs. Gale was healed by Mrs. Glover’s prayer—so quickly that the doctors were still there and witnessed the healing. One of them suggested Mrs. Glover write a book about what she was experiencing of God’s healing power and give it to the world (see Yvonne Caché von Fettweis and Robert Townsend Warneck, Mary Baker Eddy: Christian Healer, Amplified Edition, pp. 77–78). Considering this, she went home and randomly opened her Bible to these words: “Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book” (Jeremiah 30:2).
In preparation, Mrs. Glover continued studying the Bible and putting what she was learning of Jesus’ healing ministry into practice by healing others and teaching students to heal. This helped her realize more than ever before that the power of God to heal during Bible times is still with us today. After Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was published, Mary Baker Eddy explained that while writing it she felt God was dictating the book to her—unfolding the understanding of His omnipresence and complete goodness, and also the spiritual truth that man is His beloved child, the wholly spiritual image and likeness of God.
