Contagion is a belief that matter and mortal beliefs can move from one person to another. But Christian Science illumines the fact that God, good, is the source of all true movement and makes any other claim void. As Acts 17:28 says, referring to God, “For in him we live, and move, and have our being.” I’m so grateful to have seen this statement proven true many times in my life, and I now realize I need to give public gratitude for two healings dealing with contagion.
Several years ago, my youngest daughter was running cross-country and track for a university with a Division I track and field program, when she became seriously ill and was taken and admitted to the hospital affiliated with the university. We were quickly notified about what had happened. And, soon after we were notified, another university student—who had been volunteering in Africa where an Ebola outbreak was taking place—was admitted into the affiliated hospital with Ebola-like symptoms.
The admittance of this student into the hospital was covered by national news outlets and caused great concern. My daughter was diagnosed with a severe form of a different contagious illness (mononucleosis), and the fear I was dealing with seemed to be overwhelming.
