Four pillars that strengthen your church

From the July 2023 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What does any good building need? It needs a solid foundation and a strong structure, with pillars to support the walls and roof even under severe weather conditions.

What, then, would a church need as its firm foundation and sturdy structure? Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of The Church of Christ, Scientist, defines Church in part as “the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583). She also says that The Mother Church in Boston “is designed to be built on the Rock, Christ; . . .” (Manual of The Mother Church, p. 19). Founded on Christ, divine Truth, even if a Christian Science church goes through tough challenges, nothing can interfere with the progress and prosperity of that church and its members.

Church is a spiritual idea built on the Rock, Christ—its spiritual foundation—and you could say that it has several pillars, each representing spiritual qualities that bless humankind. Some of the important pillars that strengthen Christian Science churches, all of which bring healing, include the Sunday services, Sunday School, Wednesday testimony meetings, and Reading Rooms.
