In the clash of electoral politics, vitriol is a pollutant that fills the mental atmosphere with personal acrimony. A hyper-partisan spirit, whether pro or con, depicts a “me first” mentality that puts the self-interest of some ahead of the common good and exalts political dogma above the wisdom of God, the universal Principle that reigns over all His creation equitably.
The prayer Jesus gave his disciples manifests the all-encompassing spirit of Christ, the true idea of the divine Principle, Love. The Christ-spirit fosters in our lives a “we” outlook rather than a “me” focus. “Our Father which art in heaven” sounds the keynote of the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9). This sacred prayer is as nonpartisan as it is unselfish, as inclusive as it is impartial, as immediate as it is timeless. No matter how often you pray it, you’ll never once utter the words I, me, or mine. To imbibe the spirit of Christ, the spirit of Truth and Love, is to embrace the whole human family in one affection.
In the midst of political rancor, you and I have the opportunity (actually, the moral imperative) to hold firm to the great truth underlying these biblical words: “Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?” (Malachi 2:10).
