Overheard in a church lobby: “The churches used to be so full!” That same week two articles in prominent publications had noted the “continuing decline” of church attendance. It’s a topic that has generated a lot of opinion pieces and news articles, to say nothing of those lobby conversations.
Christian Scientists might feel justified in assigning a variety of causes to shrinking church congregations: times have changed; people in past decades had a stronger faith in God; there was less materialism and opposition to spiritual things; spiritual healing was easier because medical care was less advanced and pervasive. In general, the conditions and culture in which the earlier church members lived were more conducive to prayer.
