One January, I decided to make a New Year’s resolution to wash all the makeup off my face before going to bed each night. I was doing pretty well with that, so in March I was annoyed to find what I assumed was a sty on my lower eyelid.
Even though I kept it clean and avoided makeup, it wasn’t going away. A few weeks later I was struck by the thought that it wasn’t a sty, but might be a blemish—something I would have to live with.
Even as I began to think this way, a part of me still wanted to do something about it. But what? In the past I had found good guidance for all sorts of issues by studying the weekly Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly, but I was feeling bad for not making enough time to study the Lesson that week. I realized that it would be better to make a resolution to study the whole Lesson every week rather than focus on something as trivial as makeup.
