Christian Science nursing— a spiritual calling

From the December 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A longtime friend often encouraged me to consider becoming a Christian Science nurse. She had witnessed the nurturing qualities I expressed in my caring for others, including my parents and children, and during the many years I worked for a community nonprofit organization that helped those in need.

Upon retiring, I moved to another state to help my son and daughter-in-law with their young family. This major change was a challenging one for me. I missed my home, Christian Science branch church, friends, and the rest of my family. I longed for a spiritual purpose to support our beloved Church of Christ, Scientist, and its worldwide healing mission. As I listened for God’s direction, my next progressive step became clear. I applied for a Christian Science nurses’ training program in another state, and I was accepted into the two-week Christian Science Nursing Assistant class.

The class was to begin just as lockdowns—due to the pandemic—were starting. Students for the nursing course were required to quarantine in a room for two weeks prior, with little or no contact with anyone, including one another. Meals were dropped off at our doors. For me, this truly was “mountaintop time” alone with God. It was a perfect way to prepare metaphysically for this precious training in a healing environment.
