The Universe. It’s an intriguing concept, awesome really—a vast, star-studded space, believed to be ever-expanding, ageless, and sourceless, despite countless efforts to determine its age and origin. Higher than matter-based science, however, the Science of Christ or Truth, through reason and revelation, brings us a true understanding of the universe.
In the illuminations of Christian Science, based on the words and works of Christ Jesus, every thing real is shown to be a manifestation of infinite Mind, or God. The term itself, universe, derives from a Latin word meaning “turned into one” or “all in one.” In the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, using the analogy of solar concentricity, “Science reveals Soul as God, untouched by sin and death,—as the central Life and intelligence around which circle harmoniously all things in the systems of Mind” (p. 310).
Years ago, having read, accepted, and believed that statement, I was taken aback when during Christian Science class instruction our teacher looked us in the eye and asked who we thought we actually were—a speck in an immense universe? I found myself almost helplessly nodding both inwardly and (somewhat abashedly!) outwardly in full agreement.
