The healing of a crippling back injury has proved to be a landmark experience for me. It strengthened my trust in the absolute supremacy of Spirit to hold man forever intact. As the psalmist wrote, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies” (Psalms 103:2–4).
I was helping a family member move a large antique secretary (a desk with tall shelves), and in the process it fell against me, causing me to fall. My hand was pinned under its weight, and in trying to pull it free, I wrenched my back and became immobilized with pain.
For a moment I thought I might lose consciousness, but as I turned to God for help, that fear quickly subsided. I was able to think calmly and assure my family members that I would be all right. A Christian Science practitioner was called to pray for me, and arrangements were made to take me to a Christian Science nursing facility near my home.
