Exploring the meaning of spiritual sense

From the December 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The gift of spiritual sense emanates from God, Soul, and enables us to discern God and His spiritual creation. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy defines it as “a conscious, constant capacity to understand God” (p. 209) and says that it “involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, reality” (p. 298).

This sense cuts through material evidence and reveals the spiritual facts of being that are always at hand. Through entertaining the sense that God is Spirit, and that there’s no other substance, and by knowing the Science or truth of being, in which all is spiritual and not material, the evidence of physical sense is reversed.

It is through exercising spiritual sense that we are enabled to talk with God, understand God, and love and obey God.
