The close of a material history

From the December 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the larger scheme of things, the divine Comforter is teaching us that a mortal view of reality is fading out. All that Christ Jesus proved about immortality is gradually breaking into human consciousness. The light of Spirit is beginning to reveal the unreality of the darkness of matter.

This is an important point to understand regarding material history because it tells us something about the demise of specific difficulties we may face. For example, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “The spiritual status is urging its highest demands on mortals, and material history is drawing to a close” (No and Yes, p. 45). This ultimate truth has significance right within your individual life, and right at the point of a material problem, whether it’s called pain or disappointment, resentment or limitation.

Sometimes the material senses are arguing we must come to a close! A woman showed me a registered letter she received from a doctor she had sought out after not finding healing through Christian Science. He explained that without medical care she wouldn’t survive more than a few weeks. Even with such care, he felt that her chances of living were only slight. But he insisted that was better than no chance. He outlined just how the situation would deteriorate—how her life would come to a close.
