I had recently gone through a divorce and moved into a rented home. Loneliness and fear were constant companions. One evening, without warning, as I sat alone, my chest was engulfed by a great pain. I tried moving my body to different positions to alleviate the pain, but nothing I did lessened the pain’s debilitating grip.
As I clutched my chest, I saw I had two choices: either I could call 911 and have human help by my side within minutes, or I could call on God, who is constantly by my side, giving me immediate help.
As I thought about what to do, through the pain and fear, I knew I wanted to depend completely on God for my healing. I longed to commit and rely totally on God’s constant, loving care, as I knew I could from my study of Christian Science. Mary Baker Eddy states in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love. Here is the great point of departure for all true spiritual growth” (p. 91).
