MEMBERS OUTLOOK PURPOSE ACTIVITIES The Church of Christ, Scientist On April 12, 1879, a small religious group calling themselves Christian Scientists quietly met in Boston—voting "To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master [Christ Jesus], which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" ("Historical Sketch," Manual of The Mother Church, p. 17 ).
It's really only logical that a study of Christ Jesus' teachings would make us healthier physically even as it makes us better individual men and women. I saw a clear example of this when I was a youngster.
The first time I attended a Sunday service in a Christian Science church I was struck by the objectivity I heard. The Bible Lesson, found in the Christian Science Quarterly and read at the service by First and Second Readers, had been compiled with obviously thoughtful care and clear focus on the subject.
