Testimonies of Healing
It is always interesting to hear how and why different people are brought into a knowledge of Christian Science, and it is with this thought, as well as a feeling of gratitude for blessings received, that I avail myself of the privilege to tell the readers of the Journal why I became a student of this inspiring truth. Six years ago I left Plymouth, England, where I had long been an active worker in an orthodox church—from a teacher in the Sunday School to a local preacher, as well as a Christian Endeavor worker, and also in many other phases of the church work.
Having received many blessings through Christian Science in the last twenty years, I consider it a duty to send my testimony to the Field. Prior to my coming to Christian Science I was a medical nurse, and while acting in that capacity I was the victim of an injury caused by over-lifting, from which I suffered for more than a year and a half.
With love and gratitude for our Leader and our Cause, I wish to tell of some good work that has been accomplished for us in Christian Science. My husband was afflicted with a severe nervous trouble, accompanied by great pain and vomiting.
Trusting that an acknowledgment of the blessings I have received through Christian Science will assist others in their search for Truth, I give my testimony respecting an attack of fever experienced a few months ago, and my recovery therefrom. The symptoms of a very pronounced case appeared.
I am deeply thankful to God for the message of Love and Truth that has been revealed to us in Christian Science, which was brought to my notice a little over two years ago. At that date I had met with financial reverses and was in a mental condition bordering on insanity or suicide.
For some time I have felt it a duty to express my gratitude for Christian Science and what it has done for me. Had it not been for Christian Science, I would not be here today to tell the good news of my healing, and I feel very thankful to God, and to our Leader, for bringing us this saving truth.
My wife had suffered for about a year from a bad eruption on the left limb, reaching from the ankle to the knee. Various remedies were applied, but they failed to bring relief.
Among the many blessings received through Christian Science, I am most thankful for my recent experience of being instantaneously healed during the church service. About ten days before, I had injured my shoulder, but thinking the discomfort would soon pass away, had paid little attention to it, until I found myself, nearly a week later, unable to use the arm without severe pain, and suffering greatly if I leaned forward or tried to lie on the other side.
It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I give to the world my experience of the healing power of Truth in Christian Science. For more than ten years I suffered from stomach trouble.
THE following lines were written in the year 1897, when I was busily engaged in worldly pursuits, with no love for God or religion :— Through mists entangled Creep the moon's dull beams; Night veils its stars in clouds, Save one, which whispering seems To say : I, too, like you, alone Fly on through endless space, In wonderment intensified, God seeking face to face; Till homing nightingale Beyond my vision sings to me This heaven-born song of melody: O soul of longing, be thou free! God's thought is yours; to it be true! He gave me life to tell it you ! I classed myself at this time among the disciples of Robert Ingersoll : was addicted to the liquor and tobacco habits to excess; was exceedingly profane; stood among men a worldly sinner—and so continued. Again in the year 1900, while still in ignorance of God's everlasting presence, another momentary flash from the "lighthouse" of divine Love came to my consciousness, and took form in the lines which follow :— Eternal consequence of right, Through time unchanged ; Thou art man's deathless soul.
