Testimonies of Healing
It has been seventy years since I started studying Christian Science. When I was a senior in high school, a teacher gave me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs.
After attending my first Christian Science lecture, I was so inspired that the next day I obtained a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Many years ago my dad was severely burned in a barn fire. He was taken to a hospital, and there someone gave him a copy of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.
One day a teen-ager in my Sunday School class was troubled about a conversation she had had with a friend on the subject of Christian Science. She explained to me and the class that her friend was skeptical and had asked, "What would you do if you were really sick, and you weren't being healed?" The Sunday School student had never considered the possibility.
Twenty some years ago I was warned by neighbors that a "Christian Science woman" was moving in right next door, and that I should avoid getting friendly with her because of her religion. I was told that Christian Scientists were radicals, who believed God would come down from heaven and heal people.
When our son Dick was eight years old we were living in Dallas, Texas. As scorpions are a problem there, we were always very careful.
During a family outing our youngest daughter was missing for a short while. Very soon we found her floating motionless in a pool of dirty water.
Although my mother and aunt had been attending services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for many years, I found that I was unable to understand what I considered abstract terms when I had a brief exposure to Christian Science during my teens. It was only in later years, when I feared a possible life of invalidism, that I turned wholeheartedly to Science.
One time, when I was a teen-ager, I fell off my bicycle, apparently breaking my wrist in the process. My arm was put in a sling, and I stayed home from school.
During a recent Wednesday testimony meeting at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I felt that the citations from the Bible and from our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, emphasized the overcoming of fear through receptivity and an understanding of Love.
