Testimonies of Healing

I was familiar with the teachings of Christian Science intellectually but had limited knowledge of their use. After submitting to surgery, I found, upon being discharged from the hospital, that reliance upon sleeping pills and tranquilizers had been established and seemed very difficult to handle.

To have been a student of Christian Science all my life is something for which I shall never cease to be grateful. I do not remember being ill often when I was a child, but on the few occasions when the need arose, illness was quickly overcome with the loving help of my mother and a dear friend who was a devoted practitioner of Christian Science.

Christian Science was introduced to me through The Christian Science Journal. I had just missed a train and, disappointed, walked back into the station, hoping to buy something to read.

I was busily working in the garden one day cutting deadwood from some dogwood bushes, when a twig caught my eye, badly scratching the eyeball. I endeavored to keep on with the job, declaring that accidents have no place in God's kingdom.

On page 390 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony.

Thanks to radical reliance on Truth, in the course of the last twenty years I have had several healings, including one in 1950 of staphylococcic eczema on my face, which was overcome in two weeks and has never reappeared, as well as severe stomach pains. In the family we have seen evidences of God's government in our affairs in instances of supply, of attainment in professional positions, and in the achievement of success in studies and school examinations.

On Thanksgiving morning, 1966, as my wife and I were getting ready to go to church, a representative of the United States Navy called at our home to inform us that our older son, who was stationed in Saigon, had been badly injured in an accident. According to the report, he was in critical condition, unconscious and unable to communicate with us.

The loss of our first child at birth aroused me to the fact that I needed to gain a much deeper understanding of God. For the next several months I spent most of my free time studying Science and Health by Mrs.

"Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy" ( Ps. 107:2 ).

Sixty-one years ago my mother placed her three children in a Christian Science Sunday School. Although my brother and sister did not continue in the study of Christian Science, my interest remained.
