Testimonies of Healing

Although my first testimony appeared in the Sentinel over twenty years ago, my gratitude to God for all the good I have experienced in the intervening years is so great that I feel it must be recorded again. My wife and I have demonstrated the healing power of God, as revealed in Christian Science, in overcoming numerous physical difficulties, including a distressing organic condition, a large and very painful growth, the effects of a fall backward onto jagged rock over twenty feet below, and a disfiguring burn, which was healed without a trace of it being left.

Christian Science has turned my thinking away from the false, material sense of man to a better realization of his spiritual oneness, or unity, with God as His reflection. After serving in the Army for a short time at the end of the Second World War, I cast about for over a year and a half with no sense of aim in life and seemingly with no desire for any direction.

" Glory be to God, and peace to the struggling hearts!" These words which appear on page 45 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy express exactly my motive for writing this testimony.

It was my privilege to be enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School when I was but four years old, by my parents, who were members of an orthodox Protestant church. The early training I received and the concept I gained of God as ever-present Love are blessings which have influenced my whole life.

I cannot begin to thank God or to show my gratitude adequately for the changes in my human experience that have come through the study and application of Christian Science, which is in accordance with the teachings and example of Christ Jesus. When we realize that every Church of Christ, Scientist, every Christian Science Society, every Christian Science college organization, and every Christian Science healing has come through Mrs.

It was when I found myself in a desperate situation following nervous breakdowns and insomnia, which resulted in physical and mental suffering, and when all material means had failed that I was guided to avail myself of the wonderful healing power of God, revealed by Christian Science. The first steps cost me much effort.

When I was a child, my mother was healed through Christian Science of what the doctors called a complication of diseases. She had been in almost constant pain.

I was introduced to Christian Science through some copies of the Sentinel which a friend brought to my mother. I was then in my mid-teens, and what I read—especially the testimonies of healing—made such a lasting impression on me that, a few years after World War II, when a physician recommended that I have psychiatric help in overcoming a nervous breakdown, I turned to Christian Science for help instead.

In my youth, I was unable to go to school steadily because of physical frailty. Doctors were treating me constantly for a heart condition, tuberculosis, and stomach trouble.

I am deeply grateful that Mary Baker Eddy has taught us to understand better the lessons the Master, Christ Jesus, came to teach us. We learn through Christian Science that when spiritual understanding comes to human consciousness, it is never abstract but is always translated into our human experience, enriching it with concrete, visible evidence.
