Testimonies of Healing
ON A LOVELY SATURDAY IN AUGUST , our church gathered for a picnic at a member's summer home on Lake George. I decided to join my husband and two friends who were enjoying the view on a deck overlooking the lake.
I ONCE HEARD A STORY that has proved to be very helpful to me in my practice of Christian Science. It goes like this: Several people were preparing to travel by train.
I had been employed as a caregiver in the private residence of a Christian Scientist for about a year, when a situation developed that caused me extreme mental anguish as well as physical pain. I became very weak and could not keep food down.
When a mother recognizes the ever-presence of divine Love, she's able to replace impatience with patience. This change in thought brings healing to her and her daughter.
I WAS ADJUSTING THE FOOT PADS on a washing machine to make it level, when one of my fingers got caught under the five-foot-long, 15-pound crowbar I was using. As I leaned forward to get my finger out, I lost my balance and fell forward on the bar, crushing my finger in the process.
THE ACHILLES' TENDON of my right leg had been painful and stiff for several months. But since I had been able to carry on with my duties as a young wife and mother, I didn't give the situation much attention—even though my usual response would have been to pray about it.
I HAD JUST COMPLETED a three-day business trip to Jammu, India. On the eight-hour return trip, I suddenly developed symptoms of indigestion.
ALTHOUGH THE TIME HAD PASSED for my normal menstrual cycle to end, the bleeding continued—and at a much heavier rate than usual. After this had gone on for about two weeks, I began to feel weak and to experience heaviness in my limbs.
I WAS ANTICIPATING my second day of Primary class instruciton, where I was learning from a Christian Science teacher about how to heal through prayer. That morning before class, I had an opportunity to put what I was learning to use.
I HAD HURT MY ANKLE and had to treat it gently. But, for a few days, I was very casual in my prayer about it—perhaps thinking I would "walk it off.
