FLATTERY

From the November 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The old fable of the spider and the fly has not yet been forgotten.

We think our readers are informed of the character of those who stoop to flatter.

Flattery first, promises second, and the history of the poor fly third; and—what next? If the snare is spread in the way of Infinite Wisdom, the snare, spider, and all, are liable to be swept away.

"The fairest action of our human life
Is scorning to revenge an injury,
For who forgives without a further strife,
His adversary's heart to him doth tie:
And 'tis a firmer conquest, truly said,
To win the heart than overthrow the head."
