IN THE WATCH TOWER

From the November 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In what direction is our watch kept, and why do we watch? Are we faithful to that appointed us? All are not. Many enter into delusions during the day, and slumber through the night, make treaties with error, and have a false sense of peace. They dwell on volcanic heights that may any day send forth their consuming fires, that we hope will bring purification.

"Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching." How many of us who hear heed the call to watch? We desert the watch-tower of Truth, for the pleasures or profits of personal sense. If one has kept a sacred trust, they who dwell in the mortal sense of things instantly sit in judgment; and from this tribunal of error we hear the old, old cry for crucifixion. A lie will go the breadth of the land, and echo from pole to pole; but it will not stand. Humanity, with the spiritual sense counterbalancing belief, will investigate for the sake of Truth.

The counterfeit of good is like a magician's show. It seems positively real, dazzlingly acceptable, wonderfully extensive; and, with the tinkle of the bagpipe, and blare of the horn, is en rapport with the tinkle and blare of some minds.
