From the January 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The entrance of Thy words giveth light; It giveth understanding unto the simple.

Psalm cxix. 130.

Truth is the light of Spirit, which quickens human thought to the sense of Life divine, presenting man as spiritual, and reflecting all goodness. It opens to our view the mysteries of the kingdom, whereby we can comprehend heaven as a harmonious mental condition, and our privilege to possess it here and now; since, as our Master said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." Through the illuminating truth of Christian Science, in the "spirit of understanding," we are able to utilize the Word of God, making it practical in its adaptation to human needs; and by so doing we demonstrate bodily control, as manifested in improved conditions of both health and morals. Gladly should we bear testimony to this harbinger of peace and blessing,—God's appointed means of grace to-day,—the alleviator of all human suffering in belief. This alone can open the blind eyes of materiality, and give spiritual discernment of the glorious, eternal realities of Being, whereby Life is understood in its immortality, health, and harmony.
