Thirteen years ago my wife and I were healed by Christian Science of a number of so-called diseases which were pronounced utterly incurable by the physicians in New York State. I was born in a hotel, and when I got married I started a hotel for myself. I became so fond of whiskey and tobacco that I was a slave to the one for twenty-five years and to the other for forty-five years. Both these enslavements were destroyed by the reading of the little book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy. It says, Puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no animal except a loathsome worm, is at least disgusting" (Science and Health, p. 407). When I read this I had a chew of tobacco in my mouth. I immediately threw it away. The desire for it left me at once, and the cure was permanent. I have not smoked, chewed, or drank for thirteen years. This was wonderful to me, because I had smoked from fifteen to twenty cigars a day, besides chewing a great deal.
I was also healed of sick headache of forty-five years' standing, qunisy, and catarrh of twenty years' standing, dyspepsia, and other ills too numerous to mention. My wife was also healed of tumor, cancer, nervous prostration, and other diseases through the constant study of the Bible and Science and Health. Through our own healing, we learned how Jesus healed the sick, and so we were able to help others. We have had all manner of so-called diseases healed by the understanding that, "God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God" (Science and Health, p. 495).
One case of paralysis was healed instantaneously by the reading of the of word of God to the truth-seeker. Another case where a woman had an infirmity of forty-seven years' standing was healed instantaneously by explaining the word of God to her audibly, according to the teachings of Science and Health, thus proving the Scripture, "He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."
