OFTEN we are perplexed at the seeming persistence with which difficulties beset our path, and if we are not watchful and scientific in our thought discouragement may ensure. No doubt need assail us, however, and we should admit no sense of fear or self–condemnation, but should strengthen ourselves with these words of our Leader: "No good is, but the good God bestows" (Science and Health, p. 275). Nearly always the difficulty is that we have let those things which Jesus said are to be "added" take the primary place in our consciousness, thereby losing sight of the kingdom of heaven as forever first.
When we start out to make a demonstration of the truth of Christian Science, this is sure to be a manifestation of God's law and government, with its correlative fact of the nothingness of matter, of material attraction, gratification, resistance, or display. Obviously, then, we have straightway tied our hands if we decide upon any material result which is to ensue from our realization of the truth.
It is not our mental work which brings anything to pass, but mental work clears our thought and enables us to realize the truth which solves every problem. Every problem has a solution and there is only one right answer, but we should give our thought to a correct working out of each problem rather than to looking forward to the nature of the answer. To begin with, we probably do not know the answer till the question is fully worked out, and the human result, however satisfying, is nothing to compare with the further insight into God's law which comes through the right handling of the problem and which is the only abiding result of any work done in Truth.
