Over two years ago I began to read Science and Health to get some idea of what Christian Science teaches, but with no intention of accepting it. It did not take long to convince me that Christian Scientists not merely believe but know the truth about God and man. As the book requires its readers to demonstrate its teachings, and states that "sound morals are most desirable" (Science and Health, Pref., p. x), I decided to be honest with its author. I gave up the tobacco habit after being a slave to it for twenty years, also the liquor habit of fifteen years' standing, and much to my surprise the truth became plain to me, and I realized that I was healed. On two or three previous occasions I had stopped smoking for five or six months at a time, but had always had a craving for it. On this occasion there was not the least desire to smoke, nor has there been since. I have also been healed of a chronic cough and a quick temper. I now use Christian Science to prevent discords rather than to cure them, and know what it means to be free-born.
These few words can hardly begin to express my thankfulness to God, and my gratitude to our Leader for these healings, and particularly for the understanding of God, who forgives all our iniquities and heals all our diseases.
