In 1914 Christian Science found me without hope and without God. My life was so miserable I longed for death, and felt at times that if I did not get relief I should do something to end my life. I had suffered for a year from what the physicians called neurasthenia and mental weakness. I had three small children, and the fear that I should have to be separated from them caused more sorrow.
"Man's extremity is God's opportunity," we are told. My husband left the house one day with a deep desire to find something that would help me. He met a friend who told him about Christian Science. A few minutes later, while in a lawyer's office, he was asked why he did not try Christian Science. He went from there to the office of one of the physicians who had attended me, and asked him if he thought I had better try Christian Science. The doctor said it would do no harm to try it. My husband then engaged a practitioner and was given "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When he told me what he had done, I at first refused to open the book or to let the practitioner see me; but through the earnest pleading of my husband I consented. The practitioner talked with me a short time, explaining to me that God is Love, who heals all our sorrow and suffering. The joy this gave me! I was lifted into heaven. I saw the unreality of sorrow, suffering, and death. For days I touched and handled things unseen. My whole desire was to go and tell every suffering heart what I had found. My healing came slowly; but as a result of months of faithful work by this practitioner and the help of loving friends, my health, my home, and my children were restored to me.
At the time of the epidemic of Spanish influenza I was attacked with this disease. I seemed to be passing on; but through the work of a Christian Science practitioner, who was notified of my condition, and by my holding firmly to the thought that God is Life, within three hours all fear of death was destroyed. Two days afterwards my three children were attacked with the same disease, but in two weeks we were all healed. I have been healed of a severe cough, which I feared would run into consumption. I did not have treatment for this; but while I was visiting a Christian Science friend the truth was explained so clearly to me that twelve hours after this talk I was perfectly healed. Through my own understanding of Christian Science I have been healed of severe headaches.
