A Number of years before I knew of Christian Science I was healed, while reading several chapters in John's Gospel, of metatarsal neuralgia, with which I had been troubled at intervals for about ten years. I realized this at the time, but never understood it until I studied Christian Science.
When "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was handed me with the proposal that I read it, I skimmed it through as one might a new novel. Seeing the same thought expressed in three places in the book prejudiced me even more against Christian Science, and I decided not to read the book.
After about a year I read the chapter on Prayer, however, and enjoyed it, though I foolishly waited two years more for time, inclination, and opportunity to coincide before I again read in Science and Health. I found it then a most interesting book. Certain passages not understood were noted and reread next day, when their meaning became clear. Although not thinking of physical healing, I found that chronic acute indigestion, heart trouble, a perpetual fever, and a sense of exhaustion all disappeared. Many times since, while reading the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, I have been healed of colds, lameness, sick headaches, and so on. This happened when 1 forgot myself through interest in the Lesson-Sermon. After studying for a few months I was able to speak the word of truth which healed poison bites, a rash, severe colds, and erysipelas, the last-named so quickly that a physician, who had predicted that the patient would be much worse the next day, found all symptoms practically gone. Being too surprised for speech, he left the house abruptly and never returned.
