In June, 1923, I was very ill, both physically and mentally. The doctors who attended me said that they could do nothing more for me; and I had given up all hope, thinking I had only a short time to live. I had not known a well moment for years, and had suffered untold agony for months. One day a friend called to inquire about me, and my mother told him about my condition. Shortly afterward he called with his mother and sister, who are Christian Scientists, and asked me if I would be willing to have a practitioner come to see me. I could hardly raise myself to look out of the window, but I thought how wonderful it would be to be well again; and I consented to try Christian Science, but without any hope of being healed. The practitioner came the following day, and I felt the love she reflected, although I paid little attention to what she said.
After weeks of patient, loving work, I began to see a little light; but it was very difficult for me to grasp the truth of Christian Science. However, I did feel that it was wonderful that this lady came to see me in extremely hot weather, and without pay, as she had been told that I was entirely without means: she even refused to take what my mother offered her. I mention this because I had been given to understand by people who were not Scientists that the practitioners would never do anything for one without money. Now I know that the information was false. Since I have had my health again I have been able to do a few things for the lady, but I can never pay her for half she did for me.
In six months I was entirely healed of a severe spinal trouble, which at times deprived me of the use of my limbs; also of liver trouble, heart disease, and an internal difficulty which the doctors said could never be overcome without an operation. I can honestly say that I believe if it were not for Christian Science I should not be on earth to-day. My physicians had all been very kind, and had done everything they could for me, but I am so thankful that I was led to find the great Physician who heals all our diseases.
