IN the endeavor to lift her fellowmen above the shadows of material sense, away from the bondage of false belief, our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has given us throughout her writings much helpful advice, the truth of which she had demonstrated in her own experience. Her counsels are an inexhaustible source of comfort and encouragement to all who are climbing the seemingly steep path from sense to Soul. One of these may be found on page 213 Miscellaneous Writings," and it reads as follows: "Suffering or Science, or both, in the proportion that their instructions are assimilated, will point the way, shorten the process, and consummate the joys of acquiescence in the methods of divine Love."
Some years after Mrs. Eddy wrote the above, when again seeking to comfort and to heal, she used somewhat the same phraseology in her tribute to the late President McKinley. She said (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 292), "Through divine Love the right government is assimilated, the way pointed out, the process shortened, and the joy of acquiescence consummated."
A definition of the verb "to acquiesce" is "to rest satisfied ... (usually implying previous opposition);" and "yield" is given as one of its synonyms. Well did Mrs. Eddy understand that much needless suffering is experienced by mortals because of their sense of opposition to, yea, often of strong rebellion against, the methods of God!
