Testimonies of Healing

I am deeply grateful for what...

From the September 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am deeply grateful for what Christian Science has done for me and is doing for mankind. It came to me when I was in sore need of physical help. After trying many remedies, with no improvement, I was informed by a specialist that I was suffering from what he called an incurable kidney trouble. Soon afterwards I was bedfast and suffered intensely. One evening a member of the family who had been healed through Christian Science asked me to try it. Realizing my condition, and having tried many material remedies without receiving any help, I consented. A Christian Science practitioner was called and help given absently. This was about five o'clock in the afternoon. In a short while I suddenly realized that all suffering had vanished and I felt strong. I arose, dressed myself, walked to the dining room, and ate the evening meal. This was twenty-one years ago, and there has been no return of the trouble.

Recently I had a beautiful demonstration. A piece of metal weighing seventy-five or eighty pounds fell on my foot. Immediately I repeated "the scientific statement of being" from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468), and endeavored to realize its spiritual meaning. I was able to walk home by putting most of the weight on my heel. Later, when I removed my shoe, I found the foot swollen, but I experienced no pain except when attempting to walk. I passed a restful night and went to the office and performed the day's duties with no discomfort except when walking. I continued this for a week, and then fear suggested that something was seriously wrong; that I should have an X-ray examination. I went to a Christian Science practitioner and told him of the accident and the fear, but decided to put off seeing a surgeon, and with his help decided to work and overcome this discord. When I left the office of the practitioner I walked four blocks to the traction station and experienced very little discomfort. The next morning I used my foot steadily for two hours. Each day I was able to use the foot a little longer in a normal manner. Notwithstanding all this proof I still thought that my foot should be X-rayed, so two weeks after the accident I had this done. After earnest consultation over the X-ray photograph, the surgeon approached me and said, "Do you mean to say that you have been using this foot ever since the accident?" When I informed him that I had, he expressed his amazement by saying: "You had two broken toes, but they are set perfectly, and are healing satisfactorily. There is nothing I can do." In a few days I was using my foot in a normal way without any suffering or inconvenience.

I am indeed grateful for all of these proofs of God's love. Almost all of my other healings through Christian Science were practically instantaneous, proving the words of our revered Leader to be true, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I am sure all human problems can and will be solved as men forsake the material husks and truly seek spiritual good — seek "first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," as the Master taught. —
