MANKIND'S GREAT NEED

From the September 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN the turbulence and distress of the world-thought, many individuals are searching for the light. They see there is a great need, but to those who continue to seek peace, contentment, and supply in matter, darkness and fear seem to loom up as insurmountable obstacles to progress. Faith in matter begets hopelessness and failure; but God, the creator of man and the universe, the Giver of all good, knows nothing of materiality, or its discords and sorrows. As mortals begin to look to God, divine Mind, for direction and guidance, the light of Truth dawns on human consciousness and clarifies thought. The need is then seen to be for more spirituality, a greater understanding of what God is and of man's relationship to Him.

When speaking to his disciples, and through them to all who understand the power of Spirit which he taught, Jesus, our beloved Master, said, "Ye are the light of the world." As this truth unfolds to human consciousness, it will be possible to obey his loving command, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." As we obey this precept, our redemptive deeds will be expressions of infinite Truth, Life, and Love, bringing enlightenment to those weary of materiality, with its false hopes, and to those dwelling in the darkness of belief in a selfhood apart from God.

The various phases of limitation are only arguments of the carnal mind, claiming a lack of material things and supplies; therefore the need is not, primarily, for something material, but for spiritual understanding, which meets mankind's every necessity and requirement. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 107): "More love is the great need of mankind. A pure affection, concentric, forgetting self, forgiving wrongs and forestalling them, should swell the lyre of human love;" and on page 4 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes similarly, "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds."
