I turned to Christian Science, in earnest, about eight years ago. For several years prior to this time, I had occasionally attended the services of the Christian Science church and had purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, together with the Bible. I had also made the statement that if I ever embraced any religion, it would be Christian Science.
I recall one evening, in walking towards home, saying aloud, "O God, what is it all about?" When I reached home a great desire to read the Bible and Science and Health came over me, and I immediately found them and endeavored to study them. Previously I had received little religious training, and I knew none of the well-known known Bible stories. After trying for some time to understand what I was reading, I found myself closing Science and Health and earnestly asking God to give me wisdom and understanding, that I might know Him and be enabled to be of service to my fellow men. Immediately following this true prayer, came God's answer. The book was illumined, and it seemed as if I had always known what I was now reading.
My first healing was of a severe burn. I thoughtlessly grasped the handle of an aluminum pan, which was in a very hot oven. My first thought was to apply a familiar home remedy. My second thought was, Why not try Christian Science? I immediately declared, "Matter has neither intelligence, life, nor sensation" (Science and Health, p. 205). The liberation was immediate and the healing complete, and for days following this experience I went about the house singing a song of praise, "It works, it works!" With this first proof came also the desire to attend church.
