THE PRESENCE OF MIND

From the July 1937 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MUCH admiration and commendation is due one who manifests in his daily life that alertness which is commonly called "presence of mind." This expression is often used, however, without realization of its spiritual significance. Though used thoughtlessly, it has behind it unsuspected depths of meaning when examined in the ever-unfolding light of Truth. Christian Science reveals its higher meaning by interpreting it spiritually.

The ability to exhibit forethought and foresight; to think, speak, and act quickly and wisely in moments of doubt or peril, is not always recognized as coming from the Supreme Being, to whom belongs all intelligence. More often it is regarded as an inherited or educated trait of the human mind. Through the study of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we learn that Mind is a synonym for God. Therefore, since God is ever present, Mind is necessarily ever present. Hence the loss or absence of Mind is an impossibility. According to the first chapter of Genesis, man is made in the image and likeness of God. He is the complete and perfect reflection of God, of Mind. Therefore man is eternally conscious of the presence of Mind. What a marvelous heritage is this divine bestowal! When fully claimed and utilized, what unlimited good must result to mankind!

Is it not true that the seeming lack of alert mindfulness in the affairs of daily life, be they considered big or little, the indiscretion so frequently evident in one's ways and words, many times causes sorrow, regret, and even disaster? How great is the need for the realization and application of the presence of Mind, for recognition of the "still small voice," whispering needed counsel, reminding where we seem to forget, guiding with true intuition, and leading us to speak words of wisdom and love in place of hasty, thoughtless ones!
