TO those whose thought has been spiritually illumined through Christian Science, few things seem more futile than the bickerings, the disagreements, the willful strivings of men. Sometimes, nursing their grievances, mortals will remain at variance with one another for long periods. Sometimes differences of opinion will arise and anger assert itself, to be followed by tragedy. Sometimes, too, feuds will spring from incidents so trifling in themselves as to call forth a keen sense of the ridiculous on the part of the onlooker. But no matter how serious or how trifling the apparent origin of human strife, all willful strivings are to be lamented, and the cause of them speedily rectified. It is the aim of the Christian Scientist to put an end to all human strife.
Like every other phase of inharmony, human warfare has no support from God, divine Principle. God is perfect Mind, infinite Love, and man is His reflection. Man therefore reflects perfect Love. This means that the real man is entirely harmonious. It follows that, since in true or real being there is naught but harmony—not a trace of inharmony — strife is unknown to the real man. It is highly important that mortals should understand this great spiritual truth. Otherwise, they will fail to discern how evil, including all strife, is to be overcome scientifically.
The Christian Scientist often gratefully contemplates the fact that while he apparently lives in a world in which strife among mortals is frequent, he is able through the inspired teaching of Christian Science as to the allness of God, good, to know the unreality of every evil belief. The discovery, made by Mrs. Eddy, that evil is unreal, ranks as one of the greatest metaphysical discoveries of all time. Through it he can with unwavering conviction affirm the truth of God's allness, Love's allness, good's allness, and deny that evil exists. Mrs. Eddy says on page 92 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "We should blush to call that real which is only a mistake. The foundation of evil is laid on a belief in something besides God." That is precisely how the Christian Scientist regards evil: it is unreal because it is not of God. "Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him" (Deut. 4:35).
