Testimonies of Healing

The first week that I became a...

From the November 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first week that I became a student of Christian Science I was permanently healed of using drugs of any kind. During the years that have followed, this truth has been my only physician, and I have enjoyed excellent health. I have received many healings which have been instantaneous and permanent, through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Colds, sprained ankle, appendicitis, ulcerated stomach, the need for wearing eyeglasses, and other difficulties have been healed.

It is with joy and gratitude I wish to tell of a healing recently experienced in Christian Science. For about five weeks I was suffering from what appeared to be a serious internal hemorrhage. During this time I was not confined to my room for a single day. I attended our church services regularly, carried out my daily 'duties as usual, and walked around in the city, even in a snowstorm or other inclement weather, when it seemed, to me each step I took might be my last. Our Leader's hymns beginning, "O gentle presence" and "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, pp. 4 and 14), brought me many healing and reassuring messages. I used constantly to affirm that since the truth being declared by the practitioner was of God, and came forth from divine Principle, it was able to accomplish the work it was sent forth to do; that this truth could not be reversed, for its proof in healing was undeniable. In this experience I gained a clearer understanding of God as Life and substance.

Another healing for which I am particularly grateful, as I feel it has saved me from years of untoward experience, was that of symptoms of paralysis. After returning one Wednesday evening from the testimony meeting, I was suddenly attacked by severe pain, which developed during the night into what seemed to be the symptoms of paralysis. I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. The day following I was unable to leave my room, and was entirely dependent upon the kind aid of friends. The next morning, however, I was entirely free, able to go out for a walk at noon, and attend a Christian Science lecture in the evening. The healing has been permanent.
