With a longing for freedom from fear and unhappiness, I began the study and application of Christian Science about eighteen years ago. I am grateful to say that this Science has proved to be the Comforter, bringing more satisfaction and happiness than I had thought possible. It has been invaluable in the rearing of our two sons.
I am particularly grateful for an instance of protection and healing experienced about four years ago, when our younger son was twelve years of age. He was knocked from his bicycle by a speeding automobile and hurled more than thirty feet, striking his head on the pavement. He was taken to a receiving hospital; and when we were notified I called a Christian Science practitioner and rushed to the hospital.
It was found that the boy had a basal skull fracture and dislocated neck, an injured ankle, and deep cuts on his head and leg. We were told that there was little hope for him, but if he should recover he would be unconscious for several days and would have to remain in a hospital for several weeks. I called a doctor in another hospital and told him that one of our sons was under treatment by a Christian Science practitioner and asked him if he would take the practical care of him for the moment, but that I should probably bring him home sooner than a physician would advise. The doctor kindly agreed to take care of him on these terms. While the boy was being moved, about an hour later, he became conscious. He was comfortable and in possession of his faculties, and did not lose consciousness again, although the X rays taken that evening showed that the break extended from the base of the skull around one side of the head to the eye socket. His head was put in an extension to set his neck. This seemed rather severe, considering the nature of the injury, so I called the practitioner to ask if I should protest. I was told that there was nothing of that kind which could touch the boy. When I returned to his room he was asleep. When he awoke about seven hours later another X ray showed that the vertebra had gone into place, so the extension was removed. The doctor asked him how he felt, and he answered that he felt all right except that he was hungry, for he had missed his dinner the night before. It was the only meal he missed. I kept in touch with the Christian Science practitioner from the hospital, and the few unpleasant conditions which threatened were overcome instantly. The boy had no pain. He was given no medicine and his body functioned normally. The doctors were amazed at his condition.
